Hey everyone. The time has come for me to sell my MR2 Spyder. My job situation is pretty unstable right now, so I need to get rid of my debt. Consequently, I’m selling my 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder. Yes, the MR2 Spyder…the one I had wanted ever since it was still in concept car stage, and the same one that we could never buy in Canada…that is until last June when the import laws allowed fans such as myself to bring them over the border.
I combed Craigslist and finally found this one in San Jose, California. I flew down there myself and, upon the greenlight from a Toyota inspection, bought it and drove it up back to Vancouver. It has no accidents (I carfaxed it) and it has been a California car its whole life. Actually, when I arrived back in Vancouver to rain, it was likely the first time the car had every experienced rain at all. Of course, the car had never touched snow either.
It currently has just over 200 thousand kilometres (works out to under 25 thousand kilometres a year), and the car has gone through its 190,000 kilometre check up with all necessary parts replaced. I also replaced my rear brakepads and rotor with OEM Toyota parts a month ago, along with a fresh oil change.
As you can see in the pictures, it’s a black exterior with a yellow fabric interior (yes, it came yellow from the factory). If you don’t like the yellow, I’m also including a brand new leather interior kit that replaces all yellow fabric with black leather. The kit is made by Katzkin and retails for a thousand dollars, and has been discontinued so it’s difficult to find. It’s a manual 5 spd transmission and, for those of you who don’t know, it is mid-engined, rear wheel drive. There aren’t any other cars with that drive train until you get to 5 times my asking price for a Lotus Elise. The next “cheapest” MR cars are Lamborghinis and Ferraris.
That being said, the car isn’t Ferrari fast, but it’s decently quick. It has a 140HP engine out of the Toyota Celica GT (which also makes it easy to get parts), but only weighs about 2100 pounds. This makes it one of the lightest cars available, so the engine is more than adequate. I’ve embarrassed BMW Z4′s before. Also, being mid-engined, it has excellent handling. I have taken turns in it faster than in my AE86 and that car has a race-spec suspension and LSD. That’s pretty ridiculous for a stock car. It also gets excellent fuel economy. I get over 400 kilometres to a tank of gas, and the tank is only 40 litres. On my trip home from San Francisco, I averaged 700 kilometres to a tank of gas, and that included going up and down mountains.
Ok, now for the price. I’m selling the car for $13,900. This price will include brand new uninstalled extras such as: the Katzkin leather interior, Espilir Super Down springs, and a race header. Oh, I should explain the header a bit. The MR2 has 3 catalytic convertors so that it could reach ultra-low emissions vehicle status. Some MR2′s have problems where the two catalytic converters attached to the stock header, disintegrate and go into the engine causing damage. My MR2 isn’t one of these problem cars, but removing those two extra catalytic converters gains the car an extra 12-15 horsepower. In fact, I have a friend who has the same car, and bought the same header and dynoed the car before and after. He actually got an 18 horsepower difference which is higher than advertised. I don’t guarantee this number, but you’ll definitely feel the power difference. Even with the race header, there will still be one catalytic convertor left which should pass aircare.
So the car is selling for $13,900 which is a couple grand less than what others are asking. I’m also including 1500 in brand new parts. That’s like getting the car for just over $12,000 and you don’t have to pay the import taxes and duties that I did. It’s all fully registered and insured. Any other questions?
